Preparing students for placement

Students are supported through every step of placement preparation. The following documentation and certifications may be required prior to commencing.

Client support under supervision
Assist clients with daily activities and care tasks under the supervision of experienced workplace staff, building practical skills in a real care setting.

Observing and participating in workplace practices
Observe workplace routines, participate in team activities, and learn how policies and procedures operate in real environments.

Completing workplace documentation
Students complete documentation and reporting tasks aligned with course competencies and workplace requirements.

Person-centred care and infection control
Support client-centred care activities and maintain infection control standards throughout the placement period.

Respectful workplace communication
Communicate professionally and respectfully with all staff, clients, and stakeholders in line with workplace expectations.

What students should expect?

Placement is a structured learning experience. Students will receive supervision, ongoing support, skill development opportunities, and regular performance feedback.

Working With Children Check (if applicable)

Vaccination and immunisation evidence

NDIS Worker Screening Check

First Aid and CRP certification

Professional skills training

Before attending placement, students are also trained across all key professional competencies expected in healthcare and community services environments.

Assessment, competency & feedback

BIC facilitators work closely with workplace supervisors to monitor student progress, assess competency, and provide structured performance feedback throughout the placement.

Your safety is our priority

BIC works closely with placement providers to ensure every student is in a safe, supportive learning environment throughout their placement. Students must follow all safety protocols and report any concerns immediately.

All incidents must be reported to both the workplace supervisor and BIC facilitators. The college will work with providers to respond promptly to any safety concerns.

Uniform requirements

Students must present professionally at all times during placement. Appropriate attire is required to meet healthcare environment standards.

Your BIC polo shirt is provided as part of your enrolment and must be worn during all placement activities.

Students must wear

Plain black trousers or pants
Fully enclosed black shoes
Clean, professional clothing

Open shoes, sandals, or inappropriate footwear are not permitted. Clothing must be clean, neat, and suitable for healthcare environments at all times.
